YOUTH AND MIGRATION

 

As young people emigrate around the world—whether seeking opportunity, fleeing conflict or reuniting with their families—they bring with them a host of strengths that are widely utilized, if not widely recognized, by the host society. Specifically, strengths such as a linguistic and cultural diversity as well as transnational worldviews, make them valuable additions to the countries where they decide to make their lives. However, migration can also bring particular challenges for youth that include the difficulties of family reunification, learning English, difficulty accessing the college, xenophobic bullying and racial profiling. Community-based organizations like Sauti Yetu are vital in supporting immigrant youth in the development of positive cultural identities and preparing them for productive and futures.
